Background

Since Universal Analytics (UA) is being discontinued on July 1, 2023, I spent some time exploring GA4 ecommerce purchase reports. Here are my notes.

Steps

1. Inject the GTM Tracking Code

2. Fire Ecommerce Event Code from Your Site

Refer to Google's Measure ecommerce documentation to understand which events are available, then fire the ecommerce events from your frontend.

3. Configure GTM Ecommerce Events

Follow the GOOGLE ANALYTICS 4: ECOMMERCE GUIDE FOR GOOGLE TAG MANAGER guide for the GTM configuration.

4. Allow 24–48 Hours for Data to Populate

Event tracking, custom dimensions, and custom metrics can take 24 to 48 hours to update. Once the data is ready, log in to GA4 and navigate to Reports > Monetization > Ecommerce Purchases to see the custom events sent from your frontend.
