Opening

The White Sox put up 4 runs in the first inning plus a Chase Meidroth home run, sweeping the Astros 7-3 to claim their first postseason series win in 21 years, with Pope Leo XIV's personal letter apparently providing an extra blessing that had even the owner joking about converting to Catholicism. Meanwhile, the Yankees sent the Red Sox packing with an 18-2 combined score, and the Padres shut down the Cubs' league-best lineup to a combined 0-for-15 over two games. The WNBA playoffs got bloody too, and we'll tell you how Caitlin Clark got hurt in that game in just a bit.

This Episode's Big Sports Stories

1. A Letter from the Pope, and the White Sox Finally Broke Their 21-Year Curse

  • What happened: The White Sox scored 4 runs in the first inning and got a three-run blast from Chase Meidroth, sweeping the Astros 7-3 without trailing in either game. It's their first postseason series win since their 2005 World Series title, a 21-year drought, and their first trip to a Division Series since 2021. As it turns out, Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV sent a personal letter to the ballpark before the series began to bless owner Jerry Reinsdorf, writing according to NBC Sports, "I am happy to invoke upon you and your dear ones the Almighty's blessings of joy and peace."
  • Why it matters: The White Sox were a team that lost over 100 games in multiple recent seasons, so this turnaround hits different. Reinsdorf, who is Jewish, joked in an interview that he's considering converting to Catholicism, and that delightful contrast sent the whole series viral.

2. Yankees Sweep Red Sox 18-2 on Aggregate, the Most Lopsided Wild Card Result Yet

  • What happened: The Yankees crushed the Red Sox again, 9-2, in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series. Max Fried dominated for the second straight postseason, Cody Bellinger launched a three-run homer and drove in 4 runs, and Luis García Jr. also went deep as New York completed the sweep. Over the two games, the Yankees outscored Boston 18-2 and out-hit them 26-7.
  • Why it matters: This is the most one-sided result in the five years since the best-of-three Wild Card format began. The Yankees now head into the Division Series against the Rays, the AL East champions, where the competition should look very different.

3. Padres Sweep Cubs, Shutting Down MLB's Best Lineup Cold

  • What happened: The Cubs, who had the league's best offense and defense all season, lost their Wild Card Series opener 8-0 and then fell again 4-1, getting swept by the Padres. Chicago's star duo, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman, went a combined 0-for-15 across the two games and struck out 8 times.
  • Why it matters: A team that produced the most explosive offense in the league all year completely vanished at the moment it mattered most. The Padres now advance to face the top-seeded Brewers in Milwaukee, another tough test ahead.

4. WNBA Gets Bloody: A'ja Wilson Drops 36, Caitlin Clark Grinds Through with a Bloody Lip

  • What happened: In the decisive game of the first-round playoff series, A'ja Wilson exploded for 36 points, leading the Las Vegas Aces to a 94-83 win over the Indiana Fever to advance to the semifinals. Her opponent Caitlin Clark took an elbow to the face while fighting for a rebound and started bleeding on the spot, but still played 37 minutes, finishing with 18 points on 6-of-17 shooting, plus 4 assists, 4 blocks, and 2 steals.
  • Why it matters: Wilson's postgame line, "I don't want to go home," captured the whole night, and footage of Clark gutting it out with a bloody lip through the season's final game went viral online. Two very different kinds of fight, and both made this series must-watch.

5. 20-Year-Old Captain Wears the C in His First Game as Sharks Rally Past Panthers in OT

  • What happened: Macklin Celebrini, the youngest captain in San Jose Sharks history at 20 years old, wore the "C" for the first time and recorded 3 assists, setting up two second-period goals for Will Smith. The Panthers briefly tied things up when Eetu Luostarinen scored twice and Matthew Tkachuk added a goal within a 17-second span, but Luca Cagnoni sealed it for San Jose 3:14 into overtime for a 4-3 win.
  • Why it matters: A 20-year-old captain taking the lead offensively and delivering a win in overtime in his very first game wearing the "C" sends a strong signal for team morale going forward.

6. Asian Games: India Strikes Gold, Field Hockey Ends a 44-Year Wait and Boxing Writes New History

  • What happened: At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, India's women's field hockey team beat China 1-0 to win their first Asian Games gold since 1982, a title that also locks in their qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Lalremsiami scored the winning goal, fittingly in her 200th international appearance, finding the far corner, while goalkeeper Savita also saved a penalty stroke. On the same day in boxing, Lovlina Borgohain celebrated her 29th birthday with a unanimous 5-0 decision over China's Bao Ziyi to win gold, becoming only the second Indian woman after Mary Kom to win an Asian Games boxing title. India brought home 6 gold medals that day.
  • Why it matters: The field hockey team's 44-year wait finally paid off, and the boxing result wrote a new chapter in India's sporting history, making it a double milestone day for Indian sports.

Closing

The most memorable moment of this episode has to be the White Sox owner's joke about converting to Catholicism, along with the image of Caitlin Clark grinding through the finish with a bloody lip. The Division Series are already underway: the Yankees face the Rays, and the Padres head to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers. It's only going to get better from here. We'll be back next time to keep following these matchups. See you then.
