# 台積电获利创新高，台股却领跌全亚洲：背后这个数字是关键｜AI国际新闲快报

> **TL;DR** — TSMC reported sixth consecutive quarterly profit record with NT$763.

Step and repeat, the ground folded under them the moment TSMC's numbers hit the tape.## Opening

On October 15, TSMC reported its sixth consecutive quarter of record profit, yet its stock price dropped in response. South Korea's stock market even triggered its tenth circuit breaker of the year that same day, and the story behind it ties back to the latest US inflation data. Today's briefing looks at what's really driving this Asian stock rout, plus a Chinese carrier strike group that has quietly appeared off Taiwan's east coast (we'll explain what that means), and we'll wrap up with North Korea's latest missile test.

## Today's Global Focus

### 1. TSMC's Q3 earnings hit a record, but the stock fell anyway
- **What happened**: On October 15, TSMC reported third-quarter consolidated revenue of NT$1.49 trillion, beating the market consensus of NT$1.47 trillion. Net income after tax came in at NT$763.06 billion, up 68.7% year over year, marking a sixth straight quarter of record profit. The company guided fourth-quarter revenue to between $52.3 billion and $54.3 billion, implying roughly 58% year-over-year growth at the midpoint, with management describing AI demand as "very strong."
- **Why it matters**: Despite beating expectations across the board, TSMC's stock fell on the day. CNBC noted that investors were focused instead on the progress of 2nm mass production and the margin dilution effect from overseas fabs, with gross margin down 1.3 percentage points quarter over quarter to 66.4%.
- **Taiwan's angle**: TSMC is Taiwan's single largest company, and this earnings report is widely seen as a profitability benchmark for Taiwan's entire electronics supply chain.

### 2. Asian stocks tumble broadly, Taiwan follows suit
- **What happened**: On October 15, Asian tech stocks sold off across the board. South Korea's KOSPI index plunged 7.57% to close at 5,554.22, triggering a circuit breaker for the tenth time this year. Samsung Electronics fell about 9.5% and SK Hynix dropped more than 11%. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 4.9%, with SoftBank Group down over 9%. Taiwan's weighted index declined 3.4% in tandem.
- **Why it matters**: On the same day, the IMF warned that if AI-related investment or asset valuations undergo a correction, Asia could face a disproportionate impact given its central role in the global tech supply chain.
- **Taiwan's angle**: TSMC accounts for more than 40% of the weighting on the Taiwan stock exchange, so this repricing of AI capital costs is hitting Taiwan's electronics sector directly.

### 3. US September CPI runs hot, stoking rate hike expectations
- **What happened**: The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on October 14 that September CPI rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year, with core CPI up 2.6% year over year, both above the market's expected 3.6% and 2.5%. Energy prices jumped 5.2% for the month, with gasoline up 9.1%, the main driver of the overall increase.
- **Why it matters**: According to CME FedWatch, the market-implied probability of a Fed rate hike at the October 27 to 28 meeting jumped from 22.1% the day before to 47%. Citi has also shifted to expecting a December hike.
- **Taiwan's angle**: A stronger dollar and rising US Treasury yields will affect the Taiwan dollar's exchange rate and raise financing costs across Taiwan's AI supply chain.

### 4. China's Liaoning carrier strike group appears in the Philippine Sea
- **What happened**: According to USNI News on October 14, China's Liaoning carrier strike group, including the cruisers Anshan and Wuxi and the destroyer Huainan, was detected sailing in the Philippine Sea, near the southern tip of Taiwan and the Luzon Strait. China's navy described it as routine training in the Western Pacific, not directed at any specific country or target.
- **Why it matters**: Around the same time, China's maritime authorities announced live-fire exercises from October 12 to 20 in the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea, though these did not cover the waters around Taiwan. Taiwan's Defense Minister Wellington Koo said the ministry would "closely monitor" the situation and prepare for the worst-case scenario.
- **Taiwan's angle**: The carrier strike group's position sits right at the chokepoint between the waters off Taiwan's east coast and the Luzon Strait shipping lane, making it a direct indicator of military pressure on the first island chain.

### 5. North Korea test-fires two submarine-launched cruise missiles
- **What happened**: North Korea's state media KCNA reported on October 15 that the Missile Administration test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles on October 14 in waters east of the Korean Peninsula. State media said the test had no adverse impact on the safety of neighboring countries. Based on publicly released photos, South Korean analysts determined the launch platform was the 3,000-ton submarine "Kim Kun Ok," unveiled by North Korea three years ago, marking the vessel's first missile test.
- **Why it matters**: Kim Jong Un himself did not oversee the test in person; instead, officials including Kim Jong Sik and Missile Administration director Jang Chang Ha were present. Analysts point out that cruise missiles fly close to the sea surface, making them harder to detect by radar than ballistic missiles.
- **Taiwan's angle**: The test comes ahead of a possible meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un during Trump's Asia trip next month, and it affects deterrence dynamics across the entire Western Pacific, including the security environment around Taiwan.

### 6. EU summit confronts China trade deficit, dubbed "China Shock 2.0"
- **What happened**: Leaders of the EU's 27 member states opened a two-day summit in Brussels on October 15 to discuss the bloc's trade deficit with China. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen labeled the projected roughly €400 billion deficit with China in 2026 as "China Shock 2.0," with officials saying the Commission would propose "diversification tools" and a "solidarity mechanism" by year end.
- **Why it matters**: Germany and France separately proposed that, if the deficit proves unsustainable, mechanisms to cut China's access to the EU market could be considered. The summit also addressed soaring energy prices, with six countries, Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Spain, proposing an EU-wide windfall tax on energy companies.
- **Taiwan's angle**: If the EU ramps up trade defense tools, it would reshape the flow of Chinese overcapacity spillover, affecting order diversions and export positioning for Taiwan's electronics, chemical, and PET plastics industries.
- **Source**: Euronews (<https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/15/eu-leaders-enter-crunch-talks-on-energy-china-and-the-budget>)

### 7. Roof collapse at private school in Pakistan kills 29
- **What happened**: The roof of Al-Khair Education Centre, a private school in Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan, collapsed during class hours on October 15, killing at least 28 students and one teacher, with more than 50 injured. A hospital spokesperson said all the deceased students were under the age of 13.
- **Why it matters**: Al Jazeera reported the school had roughly 350 enrolled students. Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar expressed condolences on social media, and authorities have ordered an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
- **Taiwan's angle**: This incident touches on public building safety and engineering oversight, and offers a point of comparison for Taiwan's seismic retrofitting of aging school buildings and risks from illegal rooftop additions.
- **Source**: Al Jazeera (<https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/15/school-roof-collapses-in-northwestern-pakistan-killing-at-least-29-people>)

## Closing

The image worth remembering today is this: TSMC earned more than expected, yet its stock still tumbled along with the rest of the Asian market, a sign that investors right now care more about the risks of AI investment than about corporate profits themselves. In the days ahead, keep an eye on how the Fed's rate hike odds evolve, and whether tensions escalate further around China's carrier movements and North Korea's missile activity. See you tomorrow.
