# An Engineer's Hair-Rescue Mission: Recovering Hair Density in Four Months

## Preface

Almost four months ago, I noticed my hair was visibly thinning:

- Getting older
- Frequent late nights coding, rushing projects
- High stress, irregular meals
- Mostly oily, sugary, takeout food

At first I told myself: no baldness in the family, probably just exhausted lately. Then one day at the barbershop, while the stylist was blow-drying my hair, I saw my scalp was showing through and the part line had widened. That's when I started changing habits — I used to barely dry my hair after washing, just towel it off and sleep. Now I always blow-dry properly and inspect my scalp at the same time. That's when I realized **if I didn't act, it'd be too late**.

This isn't medical advice — it's my four-month "engineer hair-rescue field log," sharing what I actually did, what worked for me, and how I used "engineering thinking" to tackle hair loss.

> Please consult a professional doctor or dermatologist first. This article shares personal experience only and isn't a substitute for medical advice.

## Diagnose the problem first: stress, late nights, or genetics?

Break down the possible causes:

- Any obvious male-pattern baldness in the family? Has the hairline or crown been receding consistently?
- Long-term high stress recently? Are projects, work, family stacking up?
- Average sleep less than 6 hours? Long-term late bedtimes, poor sleep quality?
- Mostly takeout, insufficient vegetables and protein?
- Washing habits, shampoo choice, frequent scratching or tugging? Drying habits?

My situation roughly:

- No obvious male-pattern baldness in family, but hair was never very thick
- Long stretches of late-night coding + sustained stress
- Frequent late-night snacks, irregular eating
- Too little exercise, sitting for hours at work

So my read: **constitution + lifestyle + stacked stress** — leading to a serious decline in scalp condition. If I didn't improve, the next stage wouldn't be "rescue hair" but "accept the new reality."

## My hair-rescue strategy overview

Upfront: **I'm not taking any oral medication** (like the common oral male-pattern baldness drugs), mostly out of concern about side effects, plus my hair loss is still in a manageable range. So all the practices shared here center on "topical + nutrition + lifestyle changes."

I assembled the following set of approaches to improve hair growth.

> Reminder again: everyone's body is different. Before any long-term use, talk to a professional doctor first.

## 1. Minoxidil topical: an external boost to blood flow

I started with **topical hair-growth solution**. First I went to a dermatologist, who prescribed a "Minoxidil-based" solution containing **Minoxidil** as the active ingredient — not something I bought randomly to experiment with.

### Why a topical?

For mild to moderate hair loss, topical Minoxidil is a relatively low-barrier, controllable option. It locally boosts scalp blood flow and can wake up follicles that are still hanging in there.

### How I use it and the effect

- Twice a day, morning and evening — apply on sparse areas after washing or when the scalp is dry. I pair it with a beech-wood scalp massage brush from MUJI, lightly pressing and moving the scalp around. Feels like absorption and blood flow improve.

## 2. Biotin + Zinc tablets: shore up nutrition

Topical alone isn't enough. I supplement **Biotin** and **Zinc** from "system-level supply" to fill foundational nutrition. Don't expect miracles — but at least don't let the body drag everything down.

- One "Biotin + Zinc" combined tablet after breakfast daily, drink more water
- Deliberately add more protein and vegetables to meals: chicken breast, eggs, greens

## 3. Scalp massage: get blood flow up there

I used to wash my hair with a quick scrub and rinse. Now I treat "scalp massage" as part of my daily routine.

I also added a **beech-wood scalp massage brush** — easier on the hands and more even than fingers. I use the MUJI version: [Beech-wood scalp massage brush](https://shop.muji.tw/SalePage/Index/8920074).

## 4. Regular exercise + earlier bedtime: address overall health

This is the part I least want to face but matters most: **if your overall body state is bad, many topical / oral treatments will be discounted**.

### What did I change?

- At least 3 workouts per week (jogging, swimming)
- Used to often sleep at 2–3 AM. Forced myself to lie down by midnight as much as possible.

## 5. Microneedling roller: extra stimulation, but cautious

The last tool is a **microneedling roller**. I was hesitant at first — only after watching this video ([Hairliciously: Microneedling for Hair Growth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8QHQi7CbsE)) did I decide to research carefully and try it. I bought the 0.2–0.5mm version on Taobao. I'd only recommend it as an "advanced option," not something to start with on day one.

- Once a week at most, just a few light rolls over the sparse crown area
- Disinfect the device and scalp before and after; if you see redness or irritation, stop immediately and see a doctor

There's a tingling sensation but no bleeding should occur. I usually wait 8 hours after rolling before applying the topical.

## Four months later: from panic to relative ease

After about three to four months, results were quite visible — most of the hair grew back, and it's also thicker.

If you're recently noticing hair thinning, just pick two or three actions you can sustainably do — like optimizing a system, **make small continuous improvements and gradually pull the state back**.

Hopefully a few months from now, you'll also be able to look at old photos and tell yourself:

> Glad I started when I did. Looks much better now. 🙃
