# 🛠️ Running Switch without an emulator? nxnative achieves native Mac smoothness: Open Source Daily

## Introduction
According to GitHub data as of late October 2026, the new project nxnative amassed over 8,400 stars in just 30 days. Breaking away from traditional emulator architectures, it recompiles Switch games directly into native Mac code. Today, besides breaking down this technology, I will also introduce aerial-tv, a root-free launcher that solves the pain point of TV ads, and Hob, an offline AI assistant that runs 100% locally. How does it work? Let's dive in.

## Today's Open Source Picks

### 1. nxnative: A tool for statically recompiling Switch games into native Apple Silicon code
- **What it is**: It solves the pain points of high CPU overhead and stuttering when running Switch games on Apple Silicon devices, which typically occur because traditional emulators require Just-In-Time (JIT) instruction translation. Designed specifically for low-level systems and reverse engineers, this tool statically recompiles game NSP files into native macOS ARM machine code, allowing games to run directly on the CPU.
- **Recent Buzz**: According to GitHub data as of late October 2026, the project rapidly accumulated 8,446 stars within 30 days of its release. It is licensed under the MIT license, with Objective-C as its primary development language.
- **Key Features**:
  - **Static Recompilation (Non-Emulator Architecture)**: It directly rewrites and compiles Switch NSO executables into native Apple Silicon machine code, eliminating the performance overhead of real-time translation and significantly reducing CPU usage.
  - **NVN to Metal Graphics API Translation**: It translates the Switch's native NVN graphics API directly to Apple's Metal API, greatly improving GPU rendering efficiency and stabilizing frame rates.
  - **Highly Efficient Memory Optimization**: It successfully compresses the address space of large games like *The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom* to under 5GB, allowing Apple Silicon devices with only 8GB of RAM to run them smoothly.
- **Quick Start**:
  To compile on a Mac, follow these steps:
  1. **Prerequisites**: Ensure you have Xcode Command Line Tools and Homebrew installed, then install the compilation dependencies via the terminal:
     ```bash
     brew install cmake ninja
     ```
  2. **Clone and Compile** (you will need to provide your own game NSP files and keys):
     ```bash
     git clone https://github.com/seedds/nxnative.git
     cd nxnative
     ./build.sh --nsp <遊戲路徑> --keys <金鑰路徑>
     ```
  3. **GUI Alternative**: Users who are not comfortable with the command line can use NX2Apple, a community-developed GUI tool based on this project, to package their games.
- **Caveats & Limitations**: Static recompilation is not a universal emulator. Each game requires individual static translation and code adjustments, so the list of currently supported games is very limited. Additionally, dumping your own game NSP files and keys requires some technical know-how and involves legal and licensing compliance.
- **Comparison**: Compared to traditional emulators like Ryujinx or Yuzu, which require real-time instruction translation and cause extremely high CPU load, nxnative uses static recompilation technology to run games at nearly 100% native hardware performance, significantly reducing heat and power consumption.
- **Who is it for?**: It is ideal for senior engineers who are interested in low-level compiler technology and reverse engineering, and who have an Apple Silicon device on hand.

### 2. aerial-tv: An Apple TV-style, ad-free minimalist launcher for Android TV
- **What it is**: It solves the pain points of bloated systems, mandatory startup commercial ads, and cluttered system recommendation feeds on Android TVs (such as Xiaomi, TCL, etc.). This is an open-source alternative launcher designed specifically for TV users, offering a clean experience with zero ads and no recommendation feeds.
- **Recent Buzz**: According to GitHub data as of late October 2026, the project has garnered 7,226 stars. It is licensed under the MIT license and is primarily developed in Kotlin.
- **Key Features**:
  - **tvOS Minimalist Aesthetics & 4K Screensavers**: It features frosted-glass app icons, custom folder categorization, and comes with 114 built-in 4K aerial screensavers identical to those on Apple TV.
  - **Root-Free System Takeover**: By leveraging Android's Accessibility Service and security settings, it automatically and quickly bypasses the default launcher and takes over the system when the TV boots up or wakes from standby.
  - **Anti-Kill Daemon (Guard)**: To counter the behavior of certain TV brands that aggressively kill third-party launchers, it includes a built-in daemon process that automatically relaunches the desktop within 0.5 seconds of being force-closed, ensuring the launcher remains active.
- **Quick Start**:
  Follow these steps to replace your TV launcher with aerial-tv:
  1. **TV Preparation**: Enable "Developer Mode" in your TV's settings, turn on "USB Debugging (ADB)", and note down the TV's local IP address (e.g., `192.168.1.100`).
  2. **Computer Connection**: Ensure your computer and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, then run the following in your computer's terminal:
     ```bash
     adb connect 192.168.1.100:5555
     ```
  3. **One-Click Installation**: Once connected successfully, execute the official one-click installation command:
     ```bash
     curl -s https://aerial.qust.me/install.sh | bash
     ```
- **Caveats & Limitations**: Some low-end TVs have insufficient hardware decoding capabilities, which may cause stuttering when loading 4K aerial screensavers. It is recommended to lower the screensaver resolution in the settings. Additionally, a very small number of TV systems have extremely strict low-level restrictions, meaning you might still need to periodically use ADB to check if the Accessibility Service permission has been automatically revoked by the system.
- **Comparison**: Compared to traditional foreign third-party launchers like Projectivity Launcher or FLauncher, aerial-tv is specifically designed with robust anti-kill and automatic takeover mechanisms to counter intrusive TV firmware common in Asian markets, while perfectly integrating high-quality aerial screensavers.
- **Who is it for?**: Android TV users who hate startup ads, desire a minimalist Apple TV visual experience, and possess basic ADB operational skills.

### 3. Hob: An open-source personal AI assistant that runs entirely on-device with sandboxed tool support
- **What it is**: It solves the pain point of developers worrying about data leaks and privacy when uploading sensitive code or internal corporate documents to cloud services like ChatGPT or Claude. It provides a 100% on-device AI workspace for privacy-conscious individuals and enterprises, serving as a fully offline alternative to mainstream AI assistants.
- **Recent Buzz**: According to Hacker News discussion board data from late October 2026, the project received 169 points and 42 active comments, with 304 stars accumulated on GitHub. It is licensed under the MIT license and is primarily developed in TypeScript.
- **Key Features**:
  - **100% On-Device Execution**: Model inference, context processing, and tool execution are completed entirely on local hardware (such as Apple Silicon's unified memory), without sending any data to the cloud.
  - **Sandboxed Python Execution Environment**: With a built-in isolated sandbox environment, the AI can automatically write and execute Python code to analyze CSV/Excel files, plot charts, or process complex data.
  - **Deep File & PDF Integration**: It can directly read specified local folders, PDFs, and Word documents, and supports custom MCP (Model Context Protocol) server extensions.
- **Quick Start**:
  1. **Desktop Installation**: The easiest way is to go directly to the official website `hob.chat` to download the precompiled desktop application for Mac, Windows, or Linux.
  2. **Local Development Setup**: If you want to compile and customize it yourself, run the following commands:
     ```bash
     git clone https://github.com/FrigadeHQ/hob.git
     cd hob
     npm install && npm run dev
     ```
     Once started, you can configure local Ollama or Llama.cpp as the backend inference engine within the application.
- **Caveats & Limitations**: Because it runs 100% locally, the performance and accuracy of the AI assistant depend entirely on your local hardware specifications. Running large models on computers without Apple Silicon or dedicated graphics cards will significantly limit response speeds.
- **Comparison**: Compared to Ollama or Open WebUI, which only offer simple "input question, generate text" interactions, Hob is a true "local agent" capable of multi-step task planning, automatically invoking sandboxed tools, and directly modifying local files.
- **Who is it for?**: Developers who have high-spec hardware (such as Apple Silicon chips or PCs with dedicated graphics cards) and have extremely high standards for code and document privacy.
