# 📣 80% of searches now show AI Overviews, click-through rate down to just 0.9%: the new SEO battleground lies in follow-up questions | AI Marketing Daily

## Opening

Google's November webmaster report put a number right on the table: AI Overviews now cover more than 80% of searches, while an opt-out study found that the click-through rate for AI Overviews and AI Mode is just 0.9%. "Impressions without clicks" has officially become the new normal for organic search. I'm Muyan, and on today's "AI Marketing Daily" we'll also cover Microsoft Advertising opening up as many as 40 AI copywriting guidelines, the Performance Max search terms landing page report going live in mid-November, and a phone call you might get tomorrow. I'll explain shortly why you should verify who's on the other end first.

## Today's AI Marketing Highlights

### 1. Microsoft Advertising lets you rein in AI copy with 40 guidelines, but manual bidding keeps getting taken away

- **What happened**: In its October update, Microsoft opened up to 40 guidelines that advertisers can set to constrain AI-generated ad copy, and added a feature where AI helps you build your first Performance Max campaign (the automated campaign type spanning multiple placements). Brand exclusions were adjusted to apply only to text ads. Microsoft also announced that the Performance Max "search terms landing page report" will begin rolling out in mid-November. Separately, non-portfolio bidding campaigns created from October 1 onward have had Max CPC controls removed.
- **A marketer's take**: Tone, banned terms, and compliance wording finally have a place in the system, which is good news for clients with brand guidelines. But removing the bid cap means cost control during year-end campaigns now rests entirely on budget, audience, and creative, so account structures need another full review.
- **What you can do today**: Check your account to see whether newly created campaigns still have Max CPC, then compile your brand's existing "banned terms + tone guidelines" into a bulleted list so you can paste it straight in once the guidelines field is available.

### 2. That email from a self-described Google consultant? The profile photo may be AI-generated

- **What happened**: The community uncovered that ad strategy consultants affiliated with Google's Extended Workforce have been using AI-generated profile photos and pseudonyms when proactively reaching out to advertisers, raising questions about the authenticity of these representatives' identities. On the same day, Google Ads also rolled out a new "Promotions offers" reporting section.
- **A marketer's take**: The real issue isn't whether the photo is real, it's that this kind of outreach usually comes with a push to "turn on some automated setting." Once account permissions get touched, bidding strategies and budget allocation can change without your knowledge. Right now the only public account is the community's side; Google's response materials don't address it, so hold off on firm conclusions.
- **What you can do today**: Make account change history a fixed weekly review item, and before acting on any advice from a "Google rep," verify their identity through official channels.

### 3. November's Google webmaster report: AI Overviews cover 80%+ of searches, Universal Cart launches in the US

- **What happened**: Barry Schwartz's roundup of October Google Search changes notes that AI Overviews (the AI summaries above search results) now cover more than 80% of searches and continue to grow, while an opt-out study shows the click-through rate for AI Overviews and AI Mode is only 0.9%. In the same period, Universal Cart launched in US search, Nano Banana 2.1 and Gemini 4 Argon arrived in AI Mode, and Google removed labels from some AI Overviews.
- **A marketer's take**: That 0.9% comes from the researchers and won't hold true for every industry, but the direction is clear: the value of organic search is shifting from "driving people to your site" to "getting cited by AI." Ecommerce should pay particular attention, because when the cart flow moves into the search results page, control over the on-site conversion path moves with it.
- **What you can do today**: Pull the last three months of organic search impressions and clicks and look at them separately, to confirm whether your traffic decline is a ranking drop or summaries eating your clicks.
- **Source**: Search Engine Roundtable (<https://www.seroundtable.com/november-2026-google-webmaster-report-42431.html>)

### 4. Every follow-up question under an AI answer is a keyword you haven't covered yet

- **What happened**: Search Engine Land points out that Google's AI Overviews have shifted from simply answering questions to walking users through the entire purchase journey via follow-up prompts beneath the answer. The decision gets guided before the user ever reaches your site. The author argues content strategy can't just target top-of-funnel awareness keywords; it needs to cover comparisons, specs, pricing, and use cases across the full funnel in that very first query.
- **A marketer's take**: This effectively relocates the source of keyword research. You used to look at search volume in your tools; now you also need to look at which follow-up questions the AI itself raises. Content that answers only one question per page will get cited less and less.
- **What you can do today**: Pick three core product keywords, search them manually, write down the follow-up questions AI Overviews surfaces, and use them as headings for your next batch of content outlines.

### 5. After backlash over its Super Bowl AI ad, Svedka handed the camera to consumers

- **What happened**: Svedka, the vodka brand under Sazerac, made its Super Bowl debut this year using AI to animate its signature fembot. After the controversy, the brand pivoted to an open call inviting consumers to create their own 15-second ads promoting its new canned Vodka Water. The brand cited Nielsen data claiming it was the number one spirits brand by US sales growth over the past year (vendor claim).
- **A marketer's take**: The growth figure is the brand's own citation, and it doesn't mean the AI controversy was cost-free, but it does suggest backlash doesn't always show up immediately in sales. The move actually worth copying is the follow-up: not an apology statement, but handing over creative control and using UGC to restore the human touch. Voices for and against AI creative are both still out there, so brands have to decide for themselves how much to disclose.
- **What you can do today**: If you have AI-generated key visuals in play, plan a parallel set of real-person or consumer-made assets on the same theme as a backup, so you can switch the same day if sentiment turns.

### 6. Oracle, Sprinklr, and Opal all move at once: the AI tool battleground shifts to "brand memory"

- **What happened**: According to MarTech's latest product roundup, Oracle launched an AI content platform that can repurpose marketing assets and personalize digital ads, Sprinklr opened beta testing for connected marketing AI agents across six CX platforms, and Opal released an enterprise-grade "memory layer" that centrally manages brand guidelines and context across various marketing AI tools.
- **A marketer's take**: All three point to the same problem: when you're running five or six AI tools at once, where do your brand guidelines live and who has final say? Generation capability is no longer the differentiator. Cross-tool consistency and data permissions are.
- **What you can do today**: Before evaluating any AI tool, ask the vendor two questions: where do brand guidelines live, and can we take them with us when we leave the platform?

## Closing

The one thing to remember today: impressions and clicks have decoupled. 80% of searches now have AI Overviews, but the opt-out study puts the click-through rate at just 0.9%. Your content needs to be "cited," not just "ranked." Two things to watch over the next two weeks: first, whether the Performance Max search terms landing page report, going live in mid-November, can restore the visibility lost when Max CPC was taken away; and second, how fast Universal Cart actually rolls out in the US, which will determine how far in advance ecommerce needs to prepare for the off-site battleground. I'm Muyan. See you tomorrow.
