# 📣 Is ChatGPT Silently Eating Your GA4 Traffic? Check Out the Marketing Blind Spot of a Week Without UTM: AI Marketing Daily

Did you notice any anomalies in your GA4 traffic in early October? In today's "AI Marketing Daily," Muyan is here to tell you how a ChatGPT system update accidentally left marketers with a week-long blind spot in their tracking data. We will also talk about Meta's updated business terms, which were delayed under pressure, and why up to 80% of consumers still perform a "mysterious action" after seeing an AI recommendation. Stay tuned to find out!

## Today's AI Marketing Focus

### 1. Meta Delays Effective Date of New Business Terms: Web AI Scraping Controversy Gives Marketers a Temporary Breathing Room
- **What Happened**: Meta's brand-new Business and Advertising Services Terms, originally scheduled to take effect on October 30, have been urgently delayed to November 20 due to a joint boycott by global publishers and complaints to regulatory authorities. The terms originally allowed Meta to scrape website content associated with its business accounts. Although Meta subsequently removed the phrase "training AI" and changed it to "used for advertising and commercial products," legal experts warn that its scraping permissions remain extremely broad.
- **Marketer's Take**: This means that if you continue to use Meta ads or business tools after November 20, you are by default consenting to Meta scraping your website content. Although marketers can restrict this via robots.txt, doing so could directly impact ad targeting accuracy and delivery performance. We must strike a balance between privacy protection and advertising effectiveness.
- **Actionable Next Steps**: Before November 20, evaluate robots.txt blocking strategies with your legal or engineering teams, and observe whether competitors are starting to adjust their settings.

### 2. Google Privacy Policy Update: Personal AI Assistant Data Officially Integrated into Ad Targeting Signals
- **What Happened**: Google updated its privacy policy in October, confirming that it is testing ad delivery under AI Mode. When users opt to enable the "Personal Intelligence" assistant and link Gmail, Google Photos, or Calendar, Google will be able to use summaries and inferred information generated by these applications to serve personalized ads.
- **Marketer's Take**: Although Google emphasizes that advertisers will not have direct access to this private data, it means that users' personal life footprints have officially become optimization signals for the AI advertising system. While targeting precision may improve in the future, it will also test consumers' acceptance of privacy boundaries.

### 3. ChatGPT UTM Tracking Bug: Marketers Face a One-Week Blind Spot in GA4 Traffic Analysis
- **What Happened**: Following a ChatGPT system update in early October, outbound links accidentally dropped the `utm_source=chatgpt.com` tracking parameters. Additionally, due to the activation of `noopener, noreferrer`, referral traffic could not be identified, causing a massive amount of traffic to be categorized as "Direct." According to Adobe Analytics, daily ChatGPT referral traffic to affected pages decreased by about 31,000 visits, while direct traffic simultaneously increased by 26,000 visits. OpenAI fixed this bug on October 15.
- **Marketer's Take**: If you are evaluating performance reports for October, make sure to mark this data blind spot in GA4 to avoid misinterpreting the surge in "Direct" traffic and underestimating the actual traffic and conversion value that AI search brings to your brand.
- **Actionable Next Steps**: Add an annotation in your GA4 history for the first week of October to prevent misinterpretation when analyzing quarterly performance in the future.

### 4. SOCi 2024 Local Discovery Index: 80% of Consumers Still Perform a "Verification Loop" After Receiving AI Recommendations
- **What Happened**: According to the "2024 Local Discovery Index" released at SOCi's ReImagine conference in October, a staggering 81% of consumers still perform a secondary verification step (such as checking reviews or social media) after receiving an AI recommendation, while only 19% contact the business directly. Furthermore, 67% of AI users reported receiving incorrect information about local businesses from AI.
- **Marketer's Take**: This shows that in the era of AI search (GEO), a brand's marketing battlefield is not just about competing for the top AI recommendation. Maintaining information consistency and trust across traditional channels (such as Google Maps, review sites, and social media) remains the critical verification step that drives final consumer conversions.

### 5. Recon Analytics Survey: ChatGPT Ad Run Rate Surpasses $1 Billion, User Backlash Lower Than Expected
- **What Happened**: According to a survey of 275,000 US adults conducted by Recon Analytics, user backlash has not escalated as expected since OpenAI introduced ads to the free version of ChatGPT. The survey indicated that after the ads were launched, the percentage of free-tier users expressing concern about ads actually decreased slightly from 2.2% to 2.1%, and the percentage of users wanting to leave due to ads also dropped marginally.
- **Marketer's Take**: Although the survey shows that AI ads are generally accepted by users and the annualized revenue run rate surpassed $1 billion in less than 200 days (as claimed by the vendor), the ad revenue per thousand messages is only about $0.62, far below Google Search's $50. This indicates that there is still massive room for improvement in the monetization efficiency of AI advertising.

### 6. OpenAI Releases GPT-4o Canvas Interface: Focusing on Writing and Coding Collaboration Workflows
- **What Happened**: OpenAI announced the launch of the brand-new "GPT-4o Canvas" collaborative interface in October, specifically designed for writing and code editing. The interface provides a separate workspace that allows users to collaborate side-by-side with ChatGPT, featuring dedicated shortcuts for adjusting line length, modifying reading levels, and checking grammar.
- **Marketer's Take**: This feature changes the traditional "Q&A" conversational model. When writing copy or refining ad creative scripts, marketers can directly edit and optimize specific paragraphs on the screen, significantly simplifying the tedious process of copying and pasting across platforms.
- **Actionable Next Steps**: Log into ChatGPT, enable the Canvas feature, and try pasting your existing newsletters or social media copy to experience the seamless flow of side-by-side collaboration.

## Closing Thoughts
The most important takeaway today is that traffic driven by AI search is much more vulnerable to system fluctuations than we might think, and the disappearance of ChatGPT's UTM parameters is the perfect wake-up call. Moving forward, I highly recommend keeping a close eye on how major brands adjust their robots.txt settings once Meta's new terms take effect on November 20, as this will shape the future data ecosystem of ad delivery. I'm Muyan, see you tomorrow!
