# 📣 Misusing Meta Auto-Optimization Could Cost You Dearly? Advertisers Must Take Full Responsibility for AI Failures | AI Marketing Daily

Meta is set to update its terms of service in November, stipulating that brand owners must bear all risks if AI-modified ads backfire. Today, besides breaking down the self-protection strategies behind this new clause, I will also discuss the traffic shift as Google AI Overviews coverage surges past 80%, and the reasons why consumers will soon send AI agents directly to Amazon to shop instead of visiting your official website. More on this in a moment.

## Today's AI Marketing Focus

### 1. Meta Updates Ad Terms of Service: Advertisers Must Take "Full Responsibility" for AI-Modified Ads, Bookshop.org Suffers "Auto-Enhancement" Backfire
- **What happened**: In its new commercial terms effective November 20, 2026, Meta will add an "AI Features" clause, stipulating that advertisers must bear all risks and responsibilities for ad content automatically generated or modified by Meta AI. Even with the Advantage+ auto-optimization feature enabled by default, brands must take responsibility if auto-enhancements lead to errors. According to Adweek, independent bookstore Bookshop.org had its ads "ruined" after the system automatically added illustrations, and digital agency Exverus was forced to pull ads due to AI automatically adding links and translations.
- **Marketer's take**: This means we can no longer blindly trust the ad platform's automated defaults. Once AI generates inaccurate or infringing content, the platform has already waived its liability, leaving the brand owner to bear all legal and PR risks.
- **Actionable steps**: Before the Black Friday shopping season arrives, immediately check and manually disable unnecessary Advantage+ auto-optimization options in your ad manager.

### 2. Semrush Report: Google AI Overviews Coverage Surges to 88% in Commercial Searches, Traditional SEO Traffic Faces a Shakeup
- **What happened**: According to a recent Semrush study tracking 400 commercial keywords, the appearance rate of Google AI Overviews (Google's AI search summary feature) in commercial searches such as reviews, comparisons, and pricing surged to 88% in August 2026, nearly doubling from 45.75% in September 2025. Among these, e-commerce keywords saw the largest increase in coverage, skyrocketing from 32.62% to 85.11%. When weighted by search volume, the coverage reaches as high as 97.08%. This indicates that the traffic dividend of traditional SEO competing for the first page of search results is undergoing a major shakeup.
- **Marketer's take**: When over 90% of commercial searches are dominated by AI summaries, marketers must shift from traditional SEO logic to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). We must ensure that brand content is cited and recommended in AI summaries to secure a spot at the very first stage of the consumer decision-making process.
- **Actionable steps**: Optimize the structure and credibility of your website content for high-volume e-commerce terms and comparison keywords to increase the likelihood of being cited as a source by Google AI.

### 3. OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Ads to 89 Countries, Surpassing 100,000 Advertisers
- **What happened**: OpenAI announced the expansion of its ChatGPT advertising platform to 26 new countries, bringing its global market reach to 89 countries, with cumulative advertisers surpassing 100,000. According to OpenAI, the core of its advertising system is driven by a post-trained language model called "Orchestrator," which can interpret user conversation context in real time, infer commercial intent, and trigger ad bidding. The company claims its annualized revenue run rate reached $1 billion by the end of August 2026.
- **Marketer's take**: Conversational AI search advertising has officially entered the scaling phase. As users grow accustomed to seeking recommendations in ChatGPT, AI channels outside of traditional search engines will become an essential new focus for budget allocation.
- **Actionable steps**: Start researching the delivery mechanisms of ChatGPT ads and try allocating a small test budget to evaluate their conversion performance in conversational contexts.

### 4. Google Ads Expands "Smart Bidding Exploration" to PMax and Shopping Ads, Unleashing Bidding Flexibility Ahead of Black Friday
- **What happened**: Google Ads announced that it is officially expanding support for its "Smart Bidding Exploration" feature, previously limited to search ads, to Performance Max (PMax) and Standard Shopping ads. This feature allows advertisers using target return on ad spend (tROAS) bidding to set a tolerance level of 5% to 30%. By moderately lowering the effective ROAS target, the system will actively bid on long-tail search terms that were previously missed due to tight constraints but actually hold conversion potential.
- **Marketer's take**: On the eve of the Black Friday peak season, this update provides a lever to actively capture incremental conversions. However, because this bidding decision directly impacts budget and profitability, marketers must be careful not to enable it blindly to avoid diluting profit margins.
- **Actionable steps**: Before enabling this feature, calculate your brand's current product profit margins and start with a low tolerance level of 5% for small-scale testing to observe the actual conversion quality of long-tail terms.

### 5. Nova Scotia Farmers' Markets in Canada Propose Ban on Generative AI Art and Promotional Materials, Consumers Backlash Against "AI Slop"
- **What happened**: An association representing over 40 farmers' markets in Nova Scotia, Canada, is currently drafting a new policy to completely ban the use of generative AI art and promotional materials within its markets. This move stems from a strong backlash from consumers and vendors against "AI slop" flooding market promotions. According to CBC News, opponents argue that the mass-reproduced and plagiaristic nature of AI runs completely counter to the core values of farmers' markets, which emphasize "local, ethical sourcing, and supporting handmade goods."
- **Marketer's take**: This serves as a wake-up call against the abuse of AI by brands. In niche markets that emphasize authenticity, handmade craftsmanship, and localization, overusing AI visual assets not only fails to save costs but may also trigger strong backlash from target audiences, potentially leading to boycotts and bans from distribution channels.
- **Actionable steps**: When managing brands that emphasize handmade, local, natural, or high-trust values, carefully evaluate the use of AI visual assets or proactively disclose them in marketing communications to avoid triggering consumer backlash and trust crises.

### 6. Federal Court Overturns Amazon's Injunction Against Perplexity AI Shopping Agent, Opening a New Legal Chapter for AI Agent Shopping
- **What happened**: The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit overturned Amazon's preliminary injunction against Perplexity AI's shopping agent tool, "Assistant." The court ruled that "users," rather than Perplexity itself, were accessing the system. Meanwhile, according to a PYMNTS report, 40.2% of consumers prefer to let AI agents shop on major e-commerce platforms (like Amazon) when prices and shipping conditions are identical, while only 16.1% would choose to visit a brand's official website in person.
- **Marketer's take**: With the rise of AI agents shopping on behalf of consumers, traffic and transactions will further concentrate toward major platforms that offer standardized APIs or structured data. This is a major warning sign for direct traffic to brand websites. Brands must think about how to optimize their "readability" and "recommendation weight" in the eyes of AI agents.
- **Actionable steps**: Regularly review and optimize your website's Schema structured data to ensure AI agents can accurately interpret product information, pricing, and inventory when scraping.

## Summary
The most important takeaway for marketers today is that while AI platforms are waiving their own liabilities and AI summaries and agents are gradually taking over search traffic, consumers' demands for "authenticity" are only growing higher. I recommend that while pursuing automation efficiency, you must keep a close eye on budgets and creative assets, and continuously monitor the actual impact of AI Overviews on your website traffic. See you tomorrow!
